CULLINAN OUTING 29 MARCH 2009
The Cullinan Outing aims to create an event to bring back the glamour of the old diamond mining days and to support a magnificent club ‘Friends of the Rail’ (FOTR), this is really a well kept secret and a great group of people who restore, maintain and operate these huge Steam giants for the museum, there is even a person who flew out from England for seven days just to help drive loco for this event. When I went round to the loco yard on the Saturday afternoon all were hard at work polishing this recently restored 1947 15F Beast, and what a sight it was to see it glittering in the sun.
The convoy of old cars left the Hermanstad siding around 08h30 and followed a different route via Annlin in Pretoria along the foot of the ridge where the gardens in this semi tropical area really were outstanding and living up to Pretoria’s Arbor city status, onto the open road led by a 1939 red Chevrolet LDV and a green open top 1928 Chevrolet car through the flowering cosmos past the recently restored Cullinan hotel and down the tree lined Oak avenue to the hockey field.
The Cullinan Diamond supplier had donated 15 diamonds with R500.00 vouchers which you could win on the stake your claim competition by pressing your cell phone number on a huge 5 metre by 5 metre map. The Great Gatsby attired guests paraded on the Cullinan Hotel stage where the Hotel awarded a number of prizes to participants. From the photos below you will note how great the event was.
The old bicycle you can see in the photo was restored by the lady and accompanied her on the train.
Next years event will be on the 28th March 2010.
