ANGELA'S PICNIC AT THE PISTON RING CLUB 1 APRIL 2007 This event was used by the Club as its March 2007 outing. Angela'sPicnic started many years ago when a German lady Angela Heinz, who wasvery interested in old cars suggested that people owning these vehicleshad a common thread and that they should come together to show offtheir well preserved vehicles each year. AlthoughAngela's Picnic is usually held in Delta Park each year, it was heldthis year at the Piston Ring Club because of a double booking at thePark. Our Club members whowere present were Johan van Huysteen and his family from the Secundaarea, Rusty Clover, John Bedford, Judd Kirkel, John Webb, Dennis &Colleen Edgar, Lauren Edgar with her 2 kids Cheylin and Gabriel, Mikedel Frate, Chris Spinks, Dave Smith, Tommy and Sharon Smith with theirboys Ashley and Adrian, Shaun Steyn, John Bowes, Lawrie Bartle, Craigand Marj Stacey, Mark Richardson, Terence Redmond, Philip Gordon andClive Surtees all in their Minors, whilst Neville, Laura and StaceyJosman, Jorrie Jordaan with Amanda, Gary Dodds, Clive Richardson andDenny McQueen with their kids and Dave Harper all came in modern tin orother makes of cars to participate in the event. Therewas an old 1938 Morris 8, side valve on display. It is cars like this, whose owners are allowed to join our Club if they so wish, even thoughit is not a Minor. Also seen at the picnic was a low light convertible, but this has unfortunately been fitted with a Toyota twin cam engine. Atthis event, most car marques are represented and this year was noexception. Judging of the various vehicles was done in a number ofcategories. The Concours d'Elegance and Comique was won by Johan Meyerin his 1970 MGB GT. Craig Diesel won the Concours d'Etat with his 1965Austin Healey BJ8 and Alan Farndell won the Concours Tops in his 1953MG TD Mk II. All these cars were in pristine condition and were alladmired by a large public. As usual, there were stalls selling memorabilia, model cars, spares, food and drink, all adding to the flair of the occasion. Aprospective new member, Ray Hide, who owns a Morris Minor and who is amember of the Piston Ring Club, took away a membership form forcompletion and hopefully will be a member of the Club by the time thisgoes to print. Donations collected at the event were presented to the Hospice Association of the Witwatersrand. |
