MINOR HEADLINES JUNE 2009
MORRIS MINOR Owners Club (Johannesburg) NEW MEMBERS
A very hearty welcome to our new members:
Barry and Lesley Botes of Nelspruit have re-joined the Club after a years absence. Barry recently bought a burgundy 59 2 door 1000 from Schalk Burger of Kempton Park and he also has a cream 57 2 door 1000, which was assembled in the UK. It was originally painted a light grey.
Douglas and Charleen Brake from Libradene in Boksburg are new members after having bought John Bedfords beige 57 4 door Saloon.
Boyd Brockman of Blairgowrie arrived at our outing to Rusty Hoek with the Marcons. He doesnt have a Morris Minor yet, but is on the look out for one.
Thomas and Aaltje du Toit hail from Casseldale in Springs. They have a 58 2 door Saloon which seems to have come down from Bulawayo in Zimbabwe.
Shawn Spaan of Honeydew has purchased one of Jorrie Jordaans Minors. It is a 2 door 1000. He also has a grey 59 4 door Saloon and met up with us at the Cullinan Minor Steam Run event with his father, who energetically cycled from Pretoria to Cullinan and presumably back again. Shawn also attended the Rusty Hoek outing with a friend.
Dave McQueen, who has been living in New Zealand for some time has recently made contact with the Club after finding our website on the internet. He writes, Along with Dave Smith, and Christo Vorster, I was at the inaugural meeting of the JHB branch of the MMOC all those years ago. I've just come across your new website and it looks great. I'm still restoring Morris Minors and I'd like to keep in touch. From memory, much the same number of Morrys were imported into SA and NZ, although NZ was the last country to sell them, the last being sold at the beginning of 1974. There must be several hundred, if not a thousand still on the road today. You may not be aware of it, but Dave is the person who created our fun logo of the open-topped Minor with 3 characters sailing along. We are hoping to hear more from him about his Canterbury Club.
Alice Linton has paid her subs for the year, but we are struggling to get details on her. Alice, please make contact with Harry Meintjes so we can register you and send off the relevant membership card and magazine etc.
Francois and Celeste Burger of Club View East in Centurion have just joined the Club with 3 Minors. They have a 63 2 door, a 4 door and a Panel Van, but at this time, the years of manufacture of the last two are unknown.
Danielle de Clerk is a new member and lives in Wingate Park in Pretoria. She owns a British Racing Green 53 2 door split screen Minor.
Theo van Niekerk was expected to join the Club after buying Mark Richardsons Traveller, but we have not received his Membership Form. Theo, please make contact. The same applies to Archie Campbell.
Despite numerous attempts to find Richard Booth, who paid his subs into our account for last year, he has not surfaced. Consequently, we canít send magazines to him or his membership card or invite him to our outings.
We have Don Walkers postal address, but no other contact info, so we cant advise him of our events etc. Please contact Tommy Smith. The same as the above applies to Ben Nel of Hoopstad.
We hope your membership brings you and your families a wonderful and rewarding experience with us. Please remember that you are not obliged to arrive at outings in your Minor. If it is being restored, please join us in ìmodern tinî and enjoy the friendship of our Club members.
Membership figures change annually due to the renewal of subs at this time of the year. We closed the year with 124 members (that is main members and does not include spouses etc). At this time, 72 members are paid up for 2009/2010.
SICK LIST
Members or the families of members who are taken ill, or who have unfortunately been in an accident are requested to keep the Committee informed by advising their Committee Member or Buddy. Otherwise, how would we know? They in turn should advise the editor. This applies in particular where we have reported something in Minor Headlines and have no follow up, which may lead to an assumption that we do not care. This of course would be far from the truth.
We have heard through the grape vine that Tony Meintjes has had a knee operation and wish him well in his recovery.
WEDDING BELLS
Our member, Douglas and Shaylene Lendrum were married on 27 March this year.
Just to show that Morris Minors have more uses than one!! Vicky (Chris Spinks daughter) & Richard were married on 29 March, while the rest of the Club members were riding to Cullinan for our Steam Train event. Chris was not allowed to use his Traveller as its colour did not match the bridesmaid's green dresses!!
Rusty and Dawn Cloverís son Rorke married Lara Sauer on 7 December 2008. Both youngsters now live in Sydney Australia. Rusty even found a pair of shoes to wear!
Our Club wishes all of you many years of happiness and wonderful travels, particularly in a Minor!!
NEW COMMITTEE MEMBERS
At the recent Annual General Meeting, a few changes were made to your Committee, either because of resignations or because members have taken on other portfolios since the last AGM. Neil Bulley has taken over the portfolio of Treasurer; Alex Berry was appointed to help Rusty Clover for Events (John Lawtonís services will be used for Events as well); Frederick Wilson has switched to managing the Website and Chris Grant has taken up the new portfolio of Advertising Manager. We wish all of them well and hope that our members give them their support and co-operation.
Wearenow looking for nominations for Vice Chairman, an assistant totheTreasurer and an assistant to the Editor. Please folks, other thanViceChairman, the portfolios do not require much work. Forassistantportfolios, members do not have to attend Committee meetings, exceptwhere the main member cannot attend. We need an accounting personandsomeone who can assist the Editor to obtain the info required toupdatethe magazine, so please offer your services.
The full new Committee and Buddies are set out on the last page of Minor Headlines.
BUDDY SYSTEM
Some time ago, we mentioned the Buddy system. Firstly, each serving Committee member is automatically a Buddy. The system allows the Committee members to engage the services of other Club members to help share the workload. By doing this, it is also hoped that future Committee members will be more willing to take on their jobs, knowing that the workload will be more evenly shared.
If any Club member wishes to assist the Committee members, kindly advise Tommy Smith of your offer of assistance.
Basically, the purpose is to have between 4 and 7 members on a Buddys list who should be contacted via email, telephone or fax advising them of important events, renewal of subs etc. Contact should occur about once every 6 weeks or so. To this end, other than the Committee members, the following have kindly accepted the position of ìBuddyî and they andtheCommittee have had members allocated to them. They are: Albert van Heerden, Terence Redmond, Chris Spinks, John Webb, John Lawton and John Bedford and their names appear on the back of the magazine along with those of the Committee members. You should expect some form of communication from them shortly, particularly regarding the weekend away and National Rally next year.
ANNUAL RENEWAL OF SUBSCRIPTIONS!
Have I still got your attention??? Come on folks, letís get our subs paid on time. The cut off date for subs to be paid was the end of April 2009. We do give some latitude here and will accommodate those paying up to the end of July. Please COMPLETE THE FORM IN FULL and return it to your Committee member or to Harry Meintjes, together with your payment. Those paying late will be subject to a re-joining fee of R 50.00 and unfortunately, this will be your last magazine until payment is confirmed.
OWNERS ON THE MOVE! (i.e. MEMBERS GETTING AROUND)
If you move from your present address, or change your contact details in any way, PLEASE contact Harry Meintjes on (011) 827 5168 (h) or (082) 420 5950 or email him on hsm@imaginet.co.za to advise your new details.
Les McLeod, an intrepid new member has just completed an engine and gearbox overhaul on his 57 4 door Minor in time to drive down to Cape Town to collect a 58 Chevy. He is taking his wife and grand daughter, plus Foxie the dog with him and they are moving on to partake in the Milligan Tour in the Eastern Cape. His 16 year old son will fly to PE to travel back with them and Les has promised to write an article for us on the Milligan Tour, where there will also be four Minors on the rally. We wish them well in their escapade.
Frederick Wilson smsed me from Barkly East in the Eastern Cape to say he had chased a grey Minor down the high street there, only to discover that it was Les and his family travelling back from the Cape!
Terence and Noeleen Redmond have been at the coast for a weeks break.
How about sharing some Morris Experiencesî with members by relating unusual occasions? Let me have your articles and they will be published, space permitting. The first will be an article by Craig Stacey, to be featured in the next edition.
MINORS ON THE MOVE!
John Bedford sold his beige 57 1000 4 door Saloon to Douglas Brake via the website.
The following Minors are at Mike Del Frates workshop in Benoni. Janet Mathews Minor has finally gone in to have the upholstery done and there is no change to the status on Karol & Pauline Jarozynskis Minor. Mike is also busy restoring the bodywork on a 64 Fiat 2.3 and a 67 Studebaker Daytona.
Tielman Karovskys Minor has now been moved to Dave Smiths place.
Tommy Smith is busy restoring his clipper blue Morris. He started at the end of February and stripped it down completely. Thereafter, he replaced both front chassis legs which were made up by Terence Redmond and John Willcock. He has also painted the under body suspension parts, cadmium plated all the bolts and nuts, stone chipped inside the car and under the mudguards, assembled the suspension and is about to send it to the paint shop.
Neville Josman reports from Brisbane that Steve Ely's Pick-Up has arrived in Queensland. However the cab was dented and there are scratches on the bonnet. This has spoilt some of Mike Del Frate's handiwork.
Does anyone know if Bruce Cooper has left yet for New Zealand? We believe he was planning to ship his 4 door "1000" out to New Zealand.
Piero Savini has sold his 53 splitscreen Minor.
Tommy Smith has recently given George Bowenís grey '62 1000 a total engine and gearbox overall. By all accounts, it is back on the road and going very well.
NEW ZEALAND EXHIBITION
Julie Pettitt, who is putting together an exhibition for the World of WearableArt and Classic Cars Museum of Nelson in New Zealand (www.wowcars.co.nz), is focusing on the work of Issigonis and she has discovered the wonderful illustration of the Morris Minor history which can be found on our website. She states that they have an immaculate Morris Minor that will be in the exhibition, alongside which she would like to use the illustration and was asking for permission to use it. The exhibition will be starting in May and will be a work in progress as she adds more items. As it is the 50th birthday of the Mini this year, Nelson is hosting a huge rally of Mini enthusiasts from all over New Zealand, so the town will be buzzing later in the year.
MINOR OUTINGS
You meet the nicest people in a Morris Minor!
THE CULLINAN MINOR STEAM RUN ñ 29 MARCH 2009
The 3rd rendition of our Cullinan Minor Steam Run was once again a rip-roaring success. Rusty Clover and his team produced another fabulous outing which attracted 600 people who travelled to Cullinan and back on the steam train. Together with those arriving in their Morris Minors (19 of them) and pre 1971 marques, were the adventurous folk who dressed in their Great Gatsby attire. They put on a splendid show and evidence of this is indicated on the cover of this edition.
In the centre of the photograph is our own Committee member Frederick Wilson in the waistcoat, along with his friends. Visit our website to see a large collection of photographs of the event.
Rusty Clover writes, The convoy of old cars left the Hermanstad siding at around 08h30 and followed a different route this year via Annlin in Pretoria, along the foot of the ridge. The gardens in this semi tropical area were really outstanding and lived up to Pretoriaís Arbor city status. Onto the open road we went, led by a red 1939 Chevrolet LDV and Charles Gardinerís green, open-topped 1928 Chevrolet sedan, through the flowering cosmos, past the recently restored Cullinan hotel and down Cullinanís tree lined Oak avenue to the hockey field.î
Cullinan Diamonds generously donated the stunningly sparkling prizes of 15 diamonds and a number of R500.00 gift vouchers which you could win in the Stake Your Claim competition by placing your ticket onto a huge 5 by 5 metre map of the Cullinan area.
The Great Gatsby attired guests paraded on the Cullinan Hotel stage, where the Hotel awarded the category winners a number of prizes. One participant was a lady who had lovingly restored an old bicycle, which accompanied her on the train. The bicycle in question is an Adler ladyís bicycle and according to its owner, Liesel Hagen, it was produced on the afternoon of 1 March 1956 at the Adler Werke in Germany.
The event proved what a fantastic group of people the Mosquitoes attract as owners and our thanks go to everyone for their support and assistance. It is a pity that Chris (Grant) could not see his handiwork. We had a full-to-the-brim train pulled by the shining 1947 15F giant of a steam loco. It really made the great effort the ìFriends of The Railî put into this magnificent brute all worth while, after they had spent the whole of Saturday polishing it.î
Thanks to Chris and John Lawton (at least 5 other types of car owners asked me to sign their window cards to keep as a momento). They really did look great and very professionally done too. He also gave his thanks to Sharon and Tommy, Noeleen and Terence, Dawn, Norma and Mike, Craig and Marj, and Charles.
In particular, he thanked Sara, Joshua and Frederick, for doing the Club proud in their Gatsby outfits and of course to Sharon and Jozua Cloete for their fantastic thoughtfulness with gifts for the ladies and the gents. ìThey worked late into Saturday night to complete the amazing little booklet, printed and bound with all the information Sharon spent hours collecting from the library. They collected over R500 for the Club from the remaining gifts and booklets they sold on the station and at Cullinan. These two really are thoughtful and supportive of the Club
On this note, Sharon Cloetes efforts in preparing the booklet provided a magnificent bit of memorabilia for each visitor and member. The booklet sets out the history of the Morris Minor, some interesting facts, a graphic of the Morris Minor Family Tree, a history of Class 15F steam trains and a short history of Cullinan. It is a real collectorsí piece. Sharon, thank you so much. It was appreciated by so many of our members.
Our thanks go to the members of the various motor car clubs who joined us on the day to make it a memorable occasion. The Studebaker Car Club of South Africa in particular had a large number of cars in the parade. Below is an email sent to us by one of their members.
The purpose of this e-mail is to firstly, congratulate the Committee of the Morris Minor Owners Club (Johannesburg) on the success of the Cullinan Minor Steam Run held on 29 March 2009.
Secondly, I want to thank you for considering my car (63 Studebaker Lark) good enough to deserve a prize. It was a big surprise for me and my wife and I assure you that it is much appreciated.
For me, personally, it was not only an enjoyable day but also a day that I will remember for a long time. Why the day was so special to me is that for the first time in 11 years I had the joy of having 2 of my siblings present. We were 5 siblings. Two committed suicide in 1981 and 1997 respectively. What is left of my family is my eldest brother, my sister and obviously myself, being the youngest of the bunch. My sister was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2007 and in 2008 she went through a very difficult time with the treatment and so on. However, she is now in remission and I cannot thank the Lord enough for giving her a second chance at life. What really tugged at the strings of my heart was how much she enjoyed and admired the little Morris cars. I will remember that for a long, long time.
May the Morris Minor Ownersí Club in Johannesburg and all over South Africa go from strength to strength!!
Those participating in the day either enjoyed a picnic lunch somewhere in the village or made their way to one of the many restaurants or coffee shops for a snack. It was a lovely day for all to remember. You really miss out if you donít come along to this annual event.
ANGELAS PICNIC 5 APRIL 2009
This was not an official Club outing. As most of us know, Angelaís picnic was initiated by Angela Heinz, a lover of old cars. The event this year was held in Delta Park and most car marques were represented. A beneficiary of the event is a very worthy charity which supports cancer. Angela's picnic used to be extremely well supported by our Club, banner and all, but not so this year.
Other clubs featured at the event included amongst others Citroen, Lotus, Mini, MG, Porsche, V W, Opel and lots more.
Those members who were there were: Chris Spinks (Traveller), Lawrie Bartle (Traveller), John Webb (2 door saloon), Marius van Biljon (in his newly acquired 2 door Splitscreen) with his partner, Lawson Flint (Pick-up), Terence Redmond (4 door) and Erhard Langanke (Traveller).
There but not in Morrises were David Harper, Peter & Hester Hill and Paul & Linda Watmough in an Austin A40.
RUSTY HOOK COUNTRY RESTAURANT 26 APRIL 2009
Despite the name (anything with Rustys name in it has to be questionable), it was a lovely setting for a pleasant lunch and afternoon in the company of our Morris Minor friends. The venue is north west of the N1, going out on Beyers Naude Drive, so it wasnít a long drive for most of us.
The members met at various points and assembled at the country restaurant just in time for lunch. The restaurant is set in large private grounds with a dam full of ducks, fish and birds. We parked our 20 Minors along the side of the dam so that the guests could view them over the dam while they ate.
One of our new members, Boyd Brockman joined the Club on the day and we met up again with new member Shawn Spaan. The regular members who attend our outings turned up for the event and the whole Lendrum clan arrived as well.
We all enjoyed a hearty carvery meal in the dining room and spent the afternoon chatting and having fun.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 16 MAY 2009
The Annual General Meeting of the Johannesburg branch of the Morris Minor Owners Club took place on the afternoon of 16 May 2009 at the Piston Ring Cubhouse. The turn out wasnít as good as we expected, but perhaps it is a reflection of confidence in the Committee or is it apathy or a dislike of meetings?
29 members and their wives/husbands/partners arrived for the AGM, including Peter and Hester Hill, who donít often attend outings. He says that his Minor has been under repair for 22 years! Much like some of our other members. Just join us in modern tin. You are most welcome.
Tommy Smith, our Chairman, opened the Meeting by welcoming everyone. The matters arising from previous minutes were tabled and discussed and he then presented his Chairman's Report by way of a Powerpoint slide show. He mentioned the number of Minors present at each of the Clubís outings; spoke of cars being restored to their original condition; the growth in membership numbers, of whom many of the members had joined via the Clubís website; the benefits of the Clubís magazine and the website which had received in excess of 500 ìhitsî during February this year; advertising in both media, which was being energetically tackled by Chris Grant; the advent of communication via sms messages; the Clubís commitment to assist charities, in particular Cotlands; long service awards (certificates were presented to a number of the members); spares; Chris Spinksí data base which at the time contained more than 650 Minors in South Africa; and honorary membership, which was fittingly awarded to Albert van Heerden, Gary Dodds and Craig Stacey.
Looking forward, Tommy addressed the issues of advertising on the website and in the magazine and how this would benefit the Club. He also appealed to the members to advise who of them wanted to attend the weekend away at Badplaas and next yearís National Rally. Your commitment is eagerly awaited.
In the Treasurers Report, it was pleasing to report a most favourable bank balance which would be used for the benefit of the members.
The Meeting was asked to nominate persons to fill certain vacancies on the Committee, which is contained in a separate article above and the concept of the Buddy System was mentioned. Tommy thanked the Committee members for their commitment and support for the past year.
The members were then treated to an amusing video clip involving a Morris Minor, before the meeting ended, to be followed by a bring and braai.
SPARKLING WATERS SPA LUNCH 31 MAY 2009
On a perfect winters day in Gauteng, some 35 Club members thoroughly enjoyed an extended drive in 10 Minors and the rest in modern tin to this excellent venue to savour a delectable Buffet Luncheon. The Johannesburg contingent met at the agreed assembly point and the convoy of ten cars was under way on time. Fred Wilson led the way, maintaining a speed suitable for the Morrises and for the Ford Anglia which joined the party. Craig and Marj left Daisy at home as she required some attention and travelled in Very Modern Tin. En route, we stopped briefly in Magaliesburg to stretch our legs, as the distance to our destination was over one hundred kilometres. This was a fascinating drive through interesting country and spectacular mountain scenery.
Arriving at Sparkling Waters at the agreed time, the Johannesburg contingent found that the Pretoria party had already arrived. All those present enjoyed their pre-Buffet drinks in the most pleasant of surroundings, taking time to enjoy all the latest gossip and to see the Lamb-on-the-Spit being prepared in the Braai area. In the large Dining Room, two long tables had been reserved for the members who wasted little time in sampling and enjoying the extensive spread of Starters, Main Course and Sweets. This was real ìValue for Moneyî.
As usual, having partaken of the excellent fare, we departed individually, some retracing the morning run, others taking an alternate route. This was truly an excellent outing and proved that our faithful Morries are well able to take longer and hilly drives in their stride. (Thanks to Craig Stacey)

NATIONAL RALLY 2010
PLEASE URGENTLY COMPLETE AND SUBMIT THE NATIONAL RALLY INVITATION FORM INCLUDED IN THE ENVELOPE BY THE END OF JULY 2009.
Most of you have seen the letters below from the Western Cape National Rally Committee, but are being included here for those without access to emails.
(Letter No. 1 edited) No doubt you have all probably been wondering what is happening with the MMOC Western Cape? Well, let me assure you all that the 2010 National Rally is going to take place at GOUDINI SPA on the outskirts of Worcester from Sunday afternoon 21st March until after breakfast on Thursday 25th 2010 (d.v.)
The Western Cape National Rally Committee hereby extends an invitation to you, your family and the members of your club, to join us at the 2010 National Rally.
The 124 bed complex in shared chalets that we have booked is a modern, luxurious, fully equipped and serviced laager of chalets with a carport for your Morris with access to a private lapa, lawned area and springwater pool. The facilities include a restaurant, indoor mineral pool, spa complex, tennis courts, miniature golf course, supertube, trampolines and kiddies play park all surrounded by the nearby breathtaking vineyards.
We have arranged a busy and slightly different events programme which we are sure you will all enjoy. We also presume that some of you will stay on in the Cape to explore our many attractions such as the Cape Town Waterfront, the Peninsula, Table Mountain, Robben Island, Winelands etc.
During the past 2 years or so, our club has been holding many fund-raising events in order to subsidise the rates as much as possible for those delegates who are going to attend the rally. These fund-raisers have included a dance, bingo evening, a golf day, and a raffle at each club event.
The Rally committee will be visiting Goudini in the near future to finalise the rates and thereafter we will forward you a comprehensive tariff list for the 2010 Nationals. Remember that the number of beds available in the laager area is 124. Any surplus / overflow / late entries will have to be accommodated in the nearest rondavels.
Please inform your members of the Rally and if possible let us have approximate numbers of who might attend, so that we can plan our bookings with the Resort.
(Letter No. 2 edited) Some of the rally committee studied the facilities and re-negotiated a better deal with the management of Goudini Spa. We do believe that we are in for a grand time.
Please note that the chalets are being allocated on a first come first served basis and that they must first be filled before we spill over into the rondawels.
The chalets consist of: 1) 8 x 8 bed units (Two private bedrooms with one full communal bathroom upstairs. One double bed in the one bedroom and two single beds in the other bedroom. Downstairs is a repeat of upstairs with the addition of the kitchen and lounge). 2) 10 x 6 bed units (three private bedrooms on one floor with one and a half bathrooms. First bathroom with a bath and toilet, second with shower, plus kitchen and lounge. i.e. one bedroom with double bed and two bedrooms each with two single beds.
This means that although one would have to share accommodation, two families could quite happily be independent of one another except for communal lounge and kitchen facilities. Bear in mind that one should not even need these with most activities being Morrie related and outdoors or away from the resort.
All meals are included in the price viz. Sunday evening through to Thursday breakfast. Note that any additional refreshments will be for your own account. Please note that a cash bar will be operative at all evening meals and evening functions.
Once we have accommodated everyone on a share basis, it is possible that we can have units over and then would look at the family who would prefer to be alone and private, but this would have to be the exception rather than the rule.
Estimated cost per delegate is R 1 800,00, which also includes a free rally golf shirt. The first payment of 50% mustbepaid by the end of September 2009 and the second 50% is due the endofDecember 2009. All you have to do is complete the attached entry form which is not intended as a binding document, but to establish howmanypeople are interested in attending and what your preferences are.Wewould appreciate a quick response by no later than 31 July 2009 although your first (50%) deposit should be paid by the end of September.
The second entry form, which will follow at a later stage is intended to confirm your reservation and to pay the balance of your deposit.
We look forward to sharing these magic moments with you and your Morris in yet another motoring moment down memory lane. Of course we will be equally as happy for you to join us, even if you don't make it in your Morris.
Please forward all entry forms to our reservations officer, Cristina Jones at crisota@netactive.co.za or post to Morris Minor Ownersí Club, P.O. Box 38074, PINELANDS, 7430 or phone Cristina on (home / fax) 021 591-2510 or (c) 084 774 4660.

WHAT MODEL MORRIS MINOR DO I OWN?
What parts are you buying for your Minor????????? This may be controversial for some people, but it is better to know the exact date of your Minor before restoring or replacing parts. Otherwise you may spend lots of money on the wrong part, whereas the correct part is available for the same price.
Regarding the ages of member's cars, so much depends on whether the chassis and engine plates are correct. It is so easy to unscrew the plates and to substitute incorrect ones in their place. The main deviations usually found are with carburettors, air cleaners, radiators, steering columns and the shape of the seats.
These changes can lead to endless problems if members order parts strictly as per the manuals or price-lists, especially if they do not know that later (or earlier) parts have been substituted.
(Unfortunately, these types of problems sometimes lead to arguments and ill feeling amongst our members).
In future, where members state certain incorrect information on their Application Forms, they will be gently advised of the error and they can deal with the advice in their own way.
Here in SA we date our cars from when they were first registered, not from when they were assembled. This can be a problem when it comes to ordering spares, especially from the UK.
Just like us, our cars also have birth certificates and ID documents. Every Minor leaving its birthplace in England (whether from Cowley, Abingdon, Adderley Park, or elsewhere), was issued with a set of letters and numbers that uniquely identify that particular vehicle.
A study of these markings opens up a fascinating story of its birth and its infancy. At first glance, understanding these markings appears a daunting task, but itís really not that bad, as long as one major thing is borne in mind; the car must still have its original plates. These are to be found on the bulkheads, inside the engine compartments. In addition many UK-assembled vehicles have their chassis serial numbers stamped on their bulkheads, near the voltage regulator.
Many Minors (yes, even in our Club), have their original ID plates missing. Some may have been lost, some may have been replaced with a different series of letters and numbers (e.g. stamped by local municipalities) and some have obviously been exchanged with those ìliftedî from a donor car. This is often done as a desperate measure for registration and licence purposes. (Of course Morris Minor owners would never stoop so low or would they?)
SERIES MM, LOW & HIGHLIGHT SPLITSCREENS (all 918cc S-V = side valve).
Some notable Minors:
SMM 501 ñ Very first production 2-door ìlowlightî saloon, built on 20th Sept. 1948. (This car was registered NWL576, and today is alive and well and kept at the Heritage Museum at Gaydon in Warwickshire, England). SMM 527 - First Tourer made - a lowlight built 14th October 1948. SMM 62551 - First highlight saloon made on 5th October 1950 ñ a 4 door. SMM 100500 - the 100 000th Minor, made on 7th June 1951. SMM 139438 - the last Minor to use the SMM prefix, made in April 1952.
Hereafter the Nuffield system of prefixes was adopted and the SMM lettering was abandoned. A new three-letter prefix code was followed by two (later only one) digits.
Prefixes:
The first prefix letter was always F for Minor (only the English could spell Morris with an F!!.) The second prefix letter was either A (4-door), or B (2-door), or C (Tourer, or Convertible). The third prefix letter always denoted the vehicleís body colour (according to a special code).
Digits:
The three Prefixes were followed by digits, which denoted the class or specification of the car (eg 1 for Right Hand Drive (RHD) Saloons for Home market, 2 for RHD Saloons for Export, 4 for cars destined for North America, 5 for CKD (Completely Knocked Down) with RHD, 6 for CKD with Left Hand Drive (LHD).
A second digit initially denoted the type of paint finish ñ this was phased out later. Some notable Minors:

M was from Cowley, and F denoted the Adderley Park factory, where towards the very end of production, later LCVs and Travellers dating from 1970-1971 originated.
SOUTH AFRICAN ASSEMBLY AT MOTOR ASSEMBLIES & BLACKHEATH:
Series MM (918cc side-valve engines). These cars followed closely on the numbering system used for the UK assembled cars, but had ìMotor Assemblies, Durban or "Morris Motors Limited, Blackheath, CP" plates.
BLACKHEATH ASSEMBLY OF MORRIS MINORS
DATE 2 DOOR 4 DOOR July '60 to June '61 246 204 July '96 to June '62 54 24
Notably, no Travellers, Convertibles or Commercials were ever assembled at Blackheath and also none assembled in Elsie's River. These facts were given to me by Ralph Clarke, who was Chief Engineer at Blackheath before he retired.
Series II (803cc OHV engine) and Series 3 (948cc engine) assembled in 1957, 1958 and possibly early 1959):
On UK assembled cars, up to 1958, the second digit used a code from A toU to denote the colour of the paint used (e.g. B = light grey, U = Dark Green, J = Dark Grey etc.). This was stopped once the BMC system was introduced.
On South African assembled vehicles however, the third letter in the prefix to the chassis number was always H. This denoted a Completely Knocked Down (CKD) vehicle. Kits for local assembly arrived at Motor Assemblies (Durban) and Blackheath (Cape) in crates. On these cars the first digit after the first three letters was always 5, denoting a CKD car ñ RHD. This was followed by a second 5, denoting that the vehicle was finished in ìprimerî when it left the UK manufacturing plant.
Whew!! I hope you have become experts by now!
From the above (if you are not by now totally confused), there is a possibility that you can work out when your vehicle was manufactured. But, to find out when it was actually sold when new is not as easy to determine, as we in South Africa have not found easy access to proper records. (Happy hunting!! - Chris Spinks)
CAUTION!:
The timing of a new vehicleís journey from its manufacturing plant at (say) Cowley to the arrival of the shiny vehicle on the showroom floor is estimated to be anything from three to six months (or perhaps even longer!). Therefore, in comparing the chassis numbers of locally assembled cars with their dates of manufacture in the UK, we have to allow for this time-lag.
So, it might be that a car was manufactured at Cowley in 1961 (for example), sent in CKD format to Motor Assemblies in Durban in a crate, but only sold in (say) Cape Town in mid-1962. South Africa tends to follow the date of first licencing (not actual date of manufacture).
EXAMPLE:
George Bowen is in the fortunate position in knowing the actual date of sale of his present Minor 1000 to his parents on 29th September 1962.
The chassis numbers of the 43528 (948cc) Minors manufactured in the UK between the start of 1962, range from 946761 to 990289 (the very last 948cc car made on 17th September 1962.
By extrapolation therefore, Georgeís car (chassis no. 973706) was probably dispatched for export in its CKD crate late in May 1962. We can now estimate that a further 4 months elapsed while its crate was shipped to Durban, assembled at Motor Assemblies and then transported (or driven) up to Connockís in Pretoria, before the shiny new grey Minor was handed over to Georgeís parents.
We can also reflect that the first 1098cc Minor was launched in the UK on 17th September 1962, exactly 12 days before the Bowens took delivery of their new 948cc Minor in Pretoria!
Purely for the record - on all Morris Minors manufactured after 1959, the prefixes in front of the chassis numbers were changed from the old Nuffield system to the BMC system. Hence M/A 2S 3 etc., where "M" was Morris, "A" was for the BMC "A-Series" engine, "2S" was for a 2-door Saloon and "3" was for a 948 cc Series 3 Minor (i.e. a 2-door 948cc Minor "1000"). (Thanks to Chris Spinks for the invaluable information)

TECHNICAL
Windscreen Wiper Arms
On most Minors, the windscreen wiper arms lose their tension with time and with speed, tend to lift off the screen, just when you need them most to wipe off the rain. Tension can be restored temporarily by bending the arms, but in time this tension is also lost and the arms need some more bending. Eventually they are so bent, as to look very ugly.
A pair of imported arms, which look virtually identical to the originals, except that tubular springs are fitted underneath were imported and these arms create the necessary pressure on the windscreen and have worked very well.
In mentioning the problem one day to Errol Myers (our printer), he offered to experiment with the old pair of arms. Errolhassuccessfully managed to straighten both the arms (which had beenbent)and has fitted springs into both. Naturally these springs have tobe ofgood quality and have to be made of a material that will not rustordeteriorate. There is now sufficient tension to hold the wiperbladesfirmly against the windscreen.
Errol has now offered to start an exchange service for our members, where he can supply modified wiper arms, straightened and fitted with internal springs, at a cost of R150-00 per pair.
BMC Rosettes
Members may have seen some of our cars sporting red, white and blue BMC Rosettes on their windscreens. These were often proudly placed inside the windscreens of many BMC cars for export, but were also made available for sale in the UK. While some decals were purchased in the UK, others have been imported by local firms that specialise in British car spares.
Errol Myers (our printer, who also makes our MMOC membership decals for us), has reproduced exact copies of these decals for sale to our members, at around R30-00 per decal. (Thanks to Chris Spinks)
We look forward to seeing you at all of our outings. Yours in a Morris, Clive Clive Surtees (Editor)
