NEW MEMBERS
A very hearty welcome to our new members:
Chris Mostert of Witpoortjie bought a black ’58 4 door Minor from a Mr. Marlon of Alberton and he and his wife Rika have joined the Club. They were with us for the first time at the Duck Derby.
Vernon Morton has re-joined the Club. Welcome back. Vernon lives in Heidelberg and has a ’58 2 door “1000” and a Morris Oxford Pick Up.
Koos Snyman of Villieria in Pretoria has rejoined the Club after some time. He has a ‘53 4 door and a ‘58 2 door. Welcome back as well. Koos and his wife Debora joined us at the Cullinan Minor Steam Run, just a day before the magazine was released for printing.
We hope your membership brings you and your families a wonderful and rewarding experience with us and we hope to see you at some, if not all, of our future outings. In particular, we also hope to see all of you at the Nationals.
SICK LIST
Our sincere condolences go to Denny McQueen and her family on the recent passing of her mother.
Albert van Heerden is progressing well and has returned to work after quadruple by-pass surgery. He is back to full steam in preparing for the Nationals.
Laura Josman has been in and out of hospital and we all wish her well in her recovery.
Our deepest sympathies go to Tammy and Neil Bulley on their recent misfortune. We look forward to seeing them at the Nationals.
CONGRATULATIONS
Our congratulations go to Mike Del Frate who was recently awarded the Benoni Heritage & Engine Club’s trophy for “Best Restored Car of the Year”. Well done Mike!!! Mike achieved this feat with stiff competition from 4 Porsches. Not bad for a Traveller to leave 4 Porsches in the dust!
ANNUAL RENEWAL OF SUBSCRIPTIONS!
You are all advised hereby that the Club subs will remain at R 120.00 for the forthcoming year (May 2008 to April 2009). The subs are to be paid by the end of April 2008. Subs will be confirmed at the next AGM to be held in May 2008. Renewal forms were included with the last magazine. Please forward or hand them in to your Committee member or to Harry Meintjes by no later than the AGM.
Following the last notice, it is pleasing to report that some members have re-joined the Club whilst others have brought their subs up to date. Please pay for the new year timeously.
OWNERS ON THE MOVE! (i.e. MEMBERS GETTING AROUND)
If you move from your present address, or change your contact details in any way, PLEASE contact Harry Meintjes on (011) 827 5168 (h) or (082) 420 5950 or email him on harryme@absa.co.za to advise your new details. Otherwise, how could you expect communication from the Club or to receive the magazine if you do not tell us? This is one of the reasons members are asked to complete their personal details every time subs are renewed.
From the latest email sent to members re the Cullinan Minor Steam Run, no fewer than 6 members had their emails returned to the sender. They are named here in the hope that they will PLEASE send in their correct email addresses to hsm@imaginet.co.za or harryme@absa.co.za and rusty.clover@arcelormittal.com. Some messages state that the system does not recognise the name or that the Inbox is full.
They are: Alice Balayer, Tony Meintjes, Eddie Oberholzer, Hymie Riback, Richard Sandercock, Johan Vlok and Anton Weingartz.
Harry Meintjes and his wife Sanet went on a cruise ship, the Melody a short while ago and so did I with one of my sons, just before the Easter weekend.
MINORS ON THE MOVE!
The following Minors are being given love and attention at Mike Del Frate’s workshop in Benoni. John Lawton’s ’56 2 dr Minor was left behind after the car inspection, as was Clive Surtees’ ’57 2 dr “1000”. Both cars have been returned to their owners. At last I am willing to open my bonnet after having the engine compartment refurbished! Janet Mathews’ split screen model is still at the auto electrician whilst waiting for spares. The same applies to William Kelly’s Traveller which is in for a total restoration as well as Karol & Pauline Jarozynski’s 4-dr. “1000”. Steve Ely’s ’69 “1098” Pick Up is being totally refurbished. Charles Gardiner’s 1930 Morris Minor is in for a refurb. Mike del Frate’s 1940 2 dr Morris 8 is in for bodywork. Morgan Pillay’s ’61 “1000” 2 dr and Tielman Karovsky’s ’58 “1000” 2 dr are still in for restoration. The ’59 4 dr “1000” Minor which Charles Gardiner bought from Colin Dettmer is in for bodywork repairs. The bodywork of John Bedford’s Traveller is being repaired and the vehicle is being converted back to a standard Morris Traveller. Rusty Clover has managed to get his Minor’s broken crank shaft sorted out and he is back on the road. Silver Smook’s Minor was bought by Charles Gardiner.
MINOR OUTINGS
“You meet the nicest people in a Morris Minor!”
CAR INSPECTION AT MIKE’S AUTO PANEL & PAINT WORKSHOP IN BENONI 19 JANUARY 2008
We had an overcast day for this outing, which was held at Mike’s Auto Panel & Paint in Benoni. Due to the inclement weather, Sara Harper for one didn’t come through from Pretoria and possibly others were put off by the rain.
The purpose of holding the event is so that our technical boffins can inspect the Minors which will travel to the National Rally in April this year. Many Minors are driven by people such as myself, who have limited technical knowledge to say the least. The boffins (Charles Gardiner, Neville Josman and others are on hand to test the motors (I think this is done on a Dina machine) and report if the plugs, timing and electricals are in order or not. To me, their advice is invaluable, as one never knows when one’s Minor is about to break down.
When this has been done, the Minors are then jacked up on the lift so that Tommy Smith, Mike Del Frate and others can evaluate the condition of the vehicle. Many times, crucial rusted parts are identified and these have to be repaired before a catastrophe strikes.
A general check is made of the engine compartment to identify loose exhaust manifolds and other irregularities requiring attention. I for one am most grateful for the advice, assistance and time given by these guys. Due to problems identified on the cars, John Lawton’s Minor and mine stayed behind to have the problems rectified in time for the Rally.
The outing isn’t one the ladies enjoy too much, as evidenced by the turn out. Norma Del Frate was there to provide coffee, tea and rolls etc for the lunch time braai and her efforts are much appreciated. Norma had a fall during the morning and in falling, bumped her chin. Maybe her coffee was different to ours? We hope that there were no further complications. Lorna van Heerden was there (probably under duress), because Albert couldn’t drive yet. Sharon Bedford arrived during the morning to fetch her grandchild who had been there with John.
Those who turned up for the day were Albert and Lorna van Heerden, John Bowes, John Bedford, John Webb, John Lawton with his son Mark, Rusty Clover, Mike and Norma Del Frate, Chris Spinks in his newly completed Traveller, Neville Josman, Charles Gardiner, Lawson Flint in his recent acquisition, a white 1962 2 door Minor, Tommy Smith, Lawry Bartle and yours truly. Gary Dodds also joined us in his 2 door maroon 1950 Minor for a while. There were a number of Benoni Heritage Club members who visited us during the day as well.
At lunch time, we all joined in for a braai and a few beers and had an enjoyable time chatting about our Minors and the other cars in Mike’s workshop. Of particular interest was Charles Gardiner’s 1930 Morris Minor which is in for a refurb. He is going to have to hone his driving skills when it is ready, because the accelerator is placed between the clutch and the brake! The other one is Mike’s own 1940 2 door Morris 8, which is in for bodywork. By coincidence, I had been speaking the previous day to Anton Weingartz, one of our members who has recently moved to Centurion. He mentioned that he has the workshop manual for a Morris 10 and that news caught Mike’s attention!
Once again, our thanks go to Mike for the use of his workshop and the other guys for their time and assistance with the inspection. This is something that should form part of our calendar every year, as we always travel some distance when we have our weekends away.
BAREFOOT DAYS TEA GARDEN
Well, this outing once again proved the fact that you meet the nicest people in a Morris Minor. There is not enough one can say about our fellow enthusiasts Joanne and Shaun Steyn, They not only volunteered for us to share their premises for the afternoon, but also supplied mouth watering scones and coffee, tea and cold drinks.
After charging only R 10.00 per head for the tea and scones, they promptly donated the healthy sum of R 365.00 to the National Rally, which was extremely gracious of them. My biggest criticism of them is that they have been so scarce and it took this show of kindness to uncover them. To Joanne and Shaun, a really big thank you!
Of course the other unusual happening which was totally out of context, was when Paul of Pretoria demonstrated the etiquette of lifting his little finger in a genteel way when drinking tea. However, he used a beer bottle to demonstrate this finesse.
The big excitement of the day was and is the hype of the Nationals with everyone trying to get their MM’s prepared and discussing what is going to happen. Clive’s cylinder head gasket was on display and thanks to Neville and Mike’s alert observations, a major engine overall and greater costs were averted, This is another good reason why you should attend our outings, especially when you get these boffins to listen to and inspect your cars.
In all, 14 Minors and 3 “modern tin” cars attended the outing. This was an ideal venue for children (a number of children who wanted to stay longer, had to be dragged away screaming). And adults, if your friends or family are looking for an excellent party venue, you need look no further than Joanne and Shaun’s Barefoot Days. It has plenty of space and secure parking and looks over one of only a few protected ’vlei’ areas where Bullfrogs breed in an idyllic setting.
Some of those who attended were: of course Shaun and Joanne, Mike and Norma, Neville and Stacey (Laura was sick), Chris Spinks, Paul, Sarah and their boys, Noeleen, Terence and grandson, John, Sharon and grandson, Albert, Lorna and 2 grand children, Lawson Flint, John Webb, John and Heather Lawton, Keith, Merle, Doug and Shaleen, Tommy, Sharon, Ashley and Adrian, Dave Smith, Paul and Linda Watmough and Dawn and Rusty.
The afternoon run seems to be an enjoyable outing and the folk grudgingly parted from their good friends at around 18h00. (Thanks to Rusty)
FORTHCOMING EVENTS
IMPORTANT STATEMENT
Our MMOC Committee extends to all members and their families and friends, a cordial invitation to attend all our outings, especially driving your Morris Minor! Only by regular use can an investment be properly preserved. It is a recognised fact that a car sitting around, unused, deteriorates alarmingly quickly!
Many members have their cars restored from time to time. Please join us for our outings in “modern tin” instead of staying at home. We would love to see you there.
Dates have provisionally been set aside for our Club outings, but inevitably some last minute changes might have to be made. If this happens, our Events Co-ordinator, Rusty Clover, will try his best to contact members. Please contact Rusty on (012) 347 8291 (h) or 083 264 6240, or one of our Committee members before the outings, to make 100% sure of the details.
Our Committee would welcome suggestions for future outings.

Depart for Home
So there you have it! A fun-filled programme of celebratory events to occupy your time at the Nationals as we acknowledge 60 years of our wonderful cars. Let’s hope that the Johannesburg members who have indicated that they cannot be there for the full period will at least attend on the special day, Monday 28 April. The number of cars entered for the Rally exceeds 60 and we hope that the number of Minors swells to over 70 on the day. Please make the effort and advise Albert van Heerden in advance so he can make catering arrangements for you.
Albert, who has put in a monumental effort despite his recent illness and his Committee has worked tirelessly to ensure that young and old will enjoy themselves all the time. The venue is fantastic, as indicated in the last magazine. If you haven’t booked yet, you may still be lucky in finding accommodation at the resort. It is an event not to be missed!
