THE CULLINAN MINOR STEAM RUN 29 APRIL 2007
Whatanexciting addition to our calendar!!!!! If you missed this event, youwould be well advised to look out for the next time it is held.Thiswill happen on or near to 30 March 2008, just before theNationalRally, so ensure that you and your family join in the fun. Theobject of the event was forparticipants to enjoy the view and relive anostalgic journey "downmemory lane", with all the bells and whistles. Bycombiningtwo parallel heritage disciplines (historical steam andinternalcombustion) into one glorious event, our Club seized theinitiative tohost an entirely unique event which proved to be anexperience of alifetime. Rustyand Dawn Clover were instrumental invirtually single handedlyorganising this event, which involved theco-ordination of a trip in anold steam train from Capital Park inPretoria to Cullinan, along with anumber of Morris Minor vehicles andother pre 1971 vintage cars andmotorbikes. Together with the "Friendsof the Rail" and a group ofCullinan business people, they tackled thearrangments. It was a superbeffort and the Club cannot thank themenough for their initiative. Inaddition, a lot of money was raised forthe Orphans Education Fund. Afunction is being arranged for the Club tohand over our donation tothe Fund. It was hoped that atleast50 cars and 50 motor bikes would participate in the drive, butbecauseother car and motorcycle club events had been arranged for thesame day, fewer than that participated. Approximately 288 peopleenjoyed the tripin a train powered by a 24 Class steam locomotive, fora memorable tripto the old diamond mining town of Cullinan, which hasmany interestingsites to see. They even had live entertainment on thetrain! Therewere various waysin which Club members were asked to participate in theday. Firstly, marshals were required to assist in collecting tickets forthose whorode on the train. The cost for a ticket was R 140.00 per seatand halfprice for kids. Other marshals were needed to register thevehiclestaking part in the drive and others for demarcating the routefor thecars and motor bikes. Other members were asked to participate inthedrive itself. Many thanks to all of them, without whom the eventcouldnot have taken place. Thestalwarts of the Club who ablyassisted included the Josmans, DelFrates, van Heerdens, Barnes, Edgars,Jordaans, Duncans, Bowens,Bedfords, Clovers Redmonds, Smiths, Dave,Jenny Osrin, Marius, Sara,Wynand, Gary, John Webb, Brenda, Lawson andClive and Denny. Aninteresting feature for those driving toCullinan was that each car wasphotographed next to the train. Otherphotos were taken of the cars andthese together with a photo of thetrain was printed onto a coffee mugas a memento for each driver. Alongthe route, the drivers had tocollect 6 pamphlets at designated pointsin order to qualify for theprizes. The dress code for thedaywas "the Great Gatsby" and there were a number of folk who camedressedfor the occasion. Apart from prizes for the best dressedcouples, therewere prizes for best Morris cars and prizes for cars fromother clubswhich participated in the drive. The Premier Diamond Minegraciouslydonated 19 diamonds (yes, REAL ONES!) to the winners of thevariouscategories. They organised aStake Your Claimcompetition for those who rode in the train and forthe drivers as well.Congratulations to Sara Harper, Mike Del Frate andJohn Webb for winning1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes respectively in thepeople's choice category.
