Tech Tip 16 - Batteries continued
Ken Tilly of the DECC has submitted the following suggestion that you may like to add to the previous article. Here's one that you might find interesting in view of the difficulty in obtaining 6 v batteries. My 1951 Buick had a 6v battery installed when I bought it but due to the fact that it isn't in regular use it didn't last very long. At about this time a company in Pietermaritzburg started manufacturing 8v batteries. Although about as expensive as a 6v it has turned out to be a very good aquisition. My car was already fitted with a 12v alternator which was set to charge at 10v into a stepdown resistor so that only 8v went into the battery.
When the 8v battery was fitted we altered the charge rate to 10,4v and Bingo, it never let's me down, even after having stood for 4 or 5 weeks. One touch of the starter button, which spins the motor at a great rate of knots, the lights are MUCH brighter and not one of the 6v globes had to be changed and so far not one of them has blown! I would recommend the changover to anyone. Have a good one, Ken Tilly
