SAVVA Technical Tip 22
Availability of batteries
There has been quite a response to a previous article about batteries and their related problems. Apparently this is a major headache for many collectors of early vehicles and we have had numerous enquiries as to where “special” batteries could be obtained.
Following are suggested details of batteries and battery suppliers, followed by addresses:
6 Volt batteries
6 volt standard lead acid type batteries have been in short supply however SABAT have been manufacturing them but only when there is a demand. The Battery house in Pietermaritzburg are manufacturing them and stock various types and sizes, even the long skinny ones as used by some American cars from the early 50’s. There are however new “technology” 6 volt batteries on the SA market that can give up to a good 10 years life span, have a very low discharge rate, and offer around a 100 amps starting power. These batteries are available from Deltec who specialize in both Optima spiral and Varta batteries. These batteries are a bit more expensive than lead acid but worth the extra expense. Aylwin Stephenson in Jhb also imports a similar new “technology” 6 volt battery of superb quality. These batteries can also stand around for months without discharging.
8 Volt batteries
These 8 volt lead acid batteries are recommended for cars that have lazy starters. You will find the bulbs you are using are rated at 6-8 volt so don’t have to be changed. We would suggest however that you visit your friendly auto-electrician and have your generator voltage output increased to around 9.5 volts – takes minutes. It is also suggested the use of a modern 12 volt resistor coil without the resistor as the 6 volt coil could overload the points. These batteries are of normal lead acid construction and are available from The Battery House, Pmb.
12 Volt batteries
For excellent results in new or vintage cars and bikes these new technology batteries (like the 6 volt) are also available from Deltec batteries. They stock Optima, Varta and Deltec batteries. These batteries, although more expensive than the standard lead acid ones have a much larger output, are maintenance free and have extended life as well as a very slow discharge rate.
