HISTORY OF THE FREESTATE M.M.O.C.

On 5 October 1985 there was a motor show in Bloemfontein. Here some of the owners of the Morris Minor met with a guy called Gary Dodds, he was from the PE Morris Minor Club. All the vehicles drove down town and got there parking space at the Bloemfontein Zoo where the show was held.

Another two articles were published on 29 October and 6 December 1985. Mr Koot Kruger mentioned that they wanted to start a Morris Minor club here in Bloemfontein.

On 7 December 1985 people with Morris Minors attended  a motor show at Checkers,  a braai was arranged  for the people after the show.  That was the beginning of the Bloemfontein club.

Mr Koot Kruger was the first Chairman and also the founder of the club.  The first banner of the club was made by Tommie and Linda Ferreira which they also donated to the club. The club meetings were held every six weeks seeing that all the members did not stay in Bloemfontein.  The club started with 17 members.

Soon a high point of the MMOC SA was the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the launch of the Morris Minor back in 1948.  Great celebrations including a gathering of all branches and members at Gariep dam for a lovely weekend.

Every second year the National Rallies are been hosted by rotation amongst the five branches National wide, Cape Town , Port Elizabeth, Durban, Johannesburg and the Free State.

Cape Town was nominated to host the 2010 Rally and it was held at Goudini Spa in Worcester. There were 70 cars and 150 people attending the Rally. There was an outing to Worcester were all the Morris Minors were displayed and the Scotty Bag Pipe players entertained all of us.

Port Elizabeth was nominated for the 2012 rally which they held at Cape St Francis bay. We all had a tour through the Saartjie Baardtman districk . We had people’s choice at the Mall in Jeffery’s Bays were the public could choose their favourite Morris.

Durban hosted 2014 Rally – we stayed at “The Nest” in the Drakensberg. What a lovely place with all the mountains around you, everything so calm, green and fresh. We went and show the Eagles up in the mountain, that was amazing. Then we went to the Drakensberg Boys and spend the afternoon with them.

Bloemfontein hosted the 2016 Rally.

Johannesburg hosted 2018 rally at Emerald Palace – It was very interesting due to the fact that we visited Soweto. Nelson Mandela’s home, and we were entertained by gum boot dancers at the restaurant we had lunch.

Cape Town then hosted the 2020 rally at Club Mykonos – boat trip on the see, visited fish farm where they dry Bokoms, visited Velddrif, Paternoster and Saldanha bay.

Port Elizabeth will be hosting the 2022 rally.

Reading through all the news letters and AGM meetings the club enjoyed lots of fun.  Member joined, left, moved away or passed away that is the usual norm of any club. The weekend outings were also enjoyed by all the members.

Wise words:-

Success for any club owes it to members that are willing to do there share and more.
